50 Led Pixel ws2801, MADRIX and an Arduino

I've got the WS2801 pixelsrunning with an Arduino Uno and I'm trying to use it with a project for my kids' room. I've been able to nail the wiring and electronics, but some of the programming seems just beyond my mental grasp.

Is your lighting system already complete and running with existent software in Arduino, or you are looking for / must write it?
